_____________________________________________________________ Wader Expedition to Broome and Anna Plains, May 2000 _____________________________________________________________ By: Protoavis Productions, RMB 4375, Seymour, 3660, Australia. http://www.protoavis.com.au/broome2000/ Broome2000@protoavis.com.au This CD was produced not-for-profit and in the hope that people will learn more about and support the work of the: Broome Bird Observatory PO Box 1313, Broome, WA 6725 Ph. 08 9193 5600 Fax 08 9192 3364 Site manager: Bill Rutherford Ornithological manager: Adrian Boyle http://cygnus.uwa.edu.au/~austecol/observatories/broome.htm bbo@tpgi.com.au Photographs from the May 2000 wader expedition to BROOME and 80 MILE BEACH and with breeding seabird survey of Lacepede Islands. Introduction This CD contains a large number of digital photographs taken on (or just before) the May 2000 AWSG wader banding expedition to Broome. Most photos are of wildlife, from the dragonflies found in their thousands around the observatory, to reptiles, frogs, crabs, flowers, and of course, birds. It was also interesting to see and hear about the effects of the recent cyclone, though unfortunately I was not around to photograph it. A few selected photographs are highlighted, and described, such that they can be viewed simply using Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. However there are many more pictures on the CD-ROM which can be found if you explore it yourself. Purpose: Firstly, this CD is for anyone who came on the May 2000 expedition, who was involved in it in any way, or who expressed an interest in having a copy of any of these photos while I was here - I hope you find it interesting and valuable. Secondly, it is for anyone who would have liked to come on this trip, but could not make it this time ... and equally, for anyone considering coming on an future expedition or holiday to the Broome area (it should give you a good idea of the incredible variety of wildlife and landscapes to expect). Thirdly, I hope it is a useful resource - for local groups, including the Broome Bird Observatory (BBO) and individuals; for the Australian Wader Studies Group (AWSG) or other people interested in waders, and especially their plumages and moult; for students, tourists, and anyone who visits Broome or lives in the area. Lastly, I hope that it contributes to the appreciation of the natural history of the area, and the important work that the Observatory and the AWSG is doing to understand and protect it, and perhaps, that it can also raise some funds to assist in the continuation of both the observatory and the research it supports. Limitations: To ensure that I actually get this CD produced, and despite the obvious temptation to include other photographs and video taken during the trip, it will be limited pretty much to photographs which are already in the appropriate digital format. Background information will be minimal, to limit the chance that I make any mistakes (and again, to save time) - better to have no information than the wrong information! I recommend a visit to the BBO library for reference material relating to the ecology of the Broome area, and a chat to the wardens for local background information on the waders, the facilities, and current opportunities to participate in courses. It is probably best to contact the AWSG for details of upcoming expeditions. Disclaimer and Licence: All photographs except where stated otherwise are copyright Heather Gibbs, 2000, and can be used for non-commercial purposes by individuals only; by organisations by arrangement (please email h@ancc.com.au). This CD is supplied "as is" and any liability is limited to a refund of purchase price (if any). Price: Given that the production of this CD has involved substantial effort and costly equipment, I would appreciate it if people would give something in return, either a donation to the observatory, to Birds Australia or the AWSG - and, please, let me know about it. Any contributions to me personally would also be gratefully appreciated, as at an absolute minimum it costs me $5 in time and materials just to make one CD, which excludes the time and effort spent on putting the content together, and postage or packing costs.
