A wader banding team prepares the cannon
net ...
which is placed in a line along the ground
...
and camouflaged using sand ...
Holes are dug for the cannons, which propel
the net ...
and Clive checks the electrics, which
allow the cannons to fire simultaneously.
After a successful catch, the birds are
put in shady 'keeping cages' and processed by the team.
Processing involves weighing, measuring
and banding the birds.
These photos were taken around Broome
in August and September 1998,
during the VWSG / AWSG Expedition to north-west
Western Australia.
