John Gould's Birds of Australia CD-ROM
Australian Ornithological Edutainment & Reference

"I have no hesitation in recommending this CD-ROM to any reader who has an interest in Australian birds"

Australian Aviculture, October 1998

This CD-ROM links Gould's classic text, which is still extremely relevant today, with his paintings, and with modern taxonomy.

For the first time these great works are now accessible to anyone with a PC and CD-ROM drive.

Points of interest:

  • Contains full and half screen images of all 681 paintings in Gould's 7-volume folio The Birds of Australia, which was published between 1840 and 1848.

  • Links these paintings to the text of Goulds Handbook to the Birds of Australia, published in 1865, and to the present-day names of the bird species.

  • Shows where Gould traveled when he was in Australia, and illustrates some of the sites that he visited

  • Puts Gould and what he achieved in a historical context

  • Relates Gould's work to contemporary thinking, e.g. the environmental movement

  • The CD provides access to material that would otherwise be prohibitively expensive (cheapest facsimile version is over $1000 for the folios, around $60 for the text)

  • It provides search facilities to allow quick and easy access to the text

  • It links the text and pictures for the first time, enabling the text to be understood more readily

  • It links both text and pictures to modern Taxonomy, so users can search using the currently recognized common name of the bird, and find the appropriate bird in Gould's text, instantly.

  • Contains previously unpublished photographs, sound, and video, illustrating aspects of bird behavior discussed by Gould in the handbook.
